Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson and Union Counties announces new national
recognition for President & CEO Carlos Lejnieks.
2018 - Newark, NJ - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson & Union
Counties (New Jersey), President & CEO, Carlos Lejnieks has been selected
as one of five national not-for-profit leaders in consideration for the 2018
American Express Leadership Academy Alumni Award. The Award, recognizes an
Academy alumnus who consistently demonstrates strong leadership while
significantly impacting their community. As part of this recognition Lejnieks
will participate in the American Express fourth annual Leadership Academy
Global Alumni Summit in New York on April 16 and 17.
"He truly emboides the Award’s core principals,
I see no better recipient, and fully support his nomination," Said
Ron DeCicco, Retired, Pershing LLC, CEO. "During
my tenure as CEO of Pershing LLC, and most notably over the past five years, I
embarked on a programmatic partnership with Carlos and BBBS Essex, Hudson, and
Union Counties. The partnership is still active today, includes over 100
mentoring relationships with youth in Newark and Jersey City, and has served to
further develop a culture of philanthropy while increasing morale among
Pershing’s associate level staff members."
The Summit attendees include world-class leaders tackling some
of society’s most complex issues, influencing sectors ranging from education,
the arts, social services, health, the environment and more. Notably, the
recipient of the 2018 American Express Leadership Academy Alumni Award will be
announced during the above-mentioned livestream. This Award, includes a $25,000

Carlos Lejnieks and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Essex Hudson and Union
Carlos Lejnieks is
President & CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson & Union
Counties (New Jersey) and is immediate-past Chairman of Big Brothers Big
Sisters of New Jersey. Lejnieks took
over an atrophied agency in 2008 and, within four years, went from serving
approximately 116 youth to serving well over 1,100. While Lejnieks' growth for
the agency has been aggressive, quality and efficacy have been uncompromised.
So much so, that in 2017 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson and Union
Counties (BBBS) programmatic impact resulted in: (1) 95% high school graduation rate, which far
exceeds the local average (Jersey City – 80%, Newark - 73%), (2) 92%
improvement in at least one youth development asset (social acceptance,
scholastic competency, grades, risk taking, truancy, parental trust, and
presence of a special adult), and (3) 90% of youth reporting the relationship with their mentor helped them
make better choices. The quality of these relationships is a testament to
Lejnieks' commitment and drive for the organization's mission to provide
children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported
one-to-one relationships that change their lives with measurable impact for the
